Director

John Miller recently retired as the Director of Bands at American Fork High School where he taught for the past 30 years. Prior to coming to American Fork he taught in Idaho for 10 years. The American Fork Bands have received many honors under his direction. In recent years the marching band has performed in the Fiesta bowl, twice in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, twice in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, a finalist and six times Semi-finalist at the Bands of America National Marching Band Championships, the 2005 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington DC and has placed first in the Bands of America Western Regionals 8 times. In 2010 the band was a recipient of the John Philip Sousa “Sudler Shield”. The AF Wind Symphony performed at the 2004 Bands of America National Concert Band Festival and has performed twice at the Utah Music Educators State Conference. His Jazz band has twice placed runner-up at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival and placed first seven times at the Peaks Jazz Festival.
Mr. Miller was chosen as one of the 1998 Accent on Excellence recipients for the Alpine School District and in 1999 was selected as Teacher of The Year for the Alpine School District. He has received seven Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association and in 2002 was selected as one of the 50 directors in America that make a difference. He has received three “Outstanding Achievement” awards from the Utah Music Educators Association.. In 2009 and 2016 he received the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the National Federation of High School Activities Association for the Western States. In 2010 he was the presented with the “Ray Smith Music Educator of the Year” and in 2013 was awarded Utah Music Educator of the Year from the Utah Music Educators Association. In 2016 he received the Sorenson “Lifetime Achievement in Arts Education” Award. In 2016 his American Fork Band program received the National Band Associations National Blue Ribbon Award and he received the Band Worlds “Legion of Honor” award. Mr. Miller was a staff member for this past years BOA Honor Band performing in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. In 2017 he received the National Band Association National “Blue Ribbon” award for a complete and balanced long-term Band Program. In 2017 he was inducted into the "Music For All" Hall of Fame.
Holding a Masters degree in Music Education from Brigham Young University, he is the past Band Vice-President of the Utah Music Educators, past president of the Idaho Gem-state Music educators, served 10 years as chairman of the Utah All-State Band, 5 years as Marching Band Chairman and has served as the Treasurer for the Utah Music Educators Association for the past 18 years and currently serves as the Western Regional Chair of the National Band Association and Member at Large of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Band Council. He is a member of the Timpanogos Arts Foundation Governing Board. He is a frequent adjudicator and clinician throughout the United States. In 2006 Mr. Miller became the founding director of the Wasatch Winds Symphonic Band, an adult community band and in 2017 founded the Wasatch Show Band. Under his direction the Wasatch Winds has grown to over 85 members and already has an established concert series in the community.

Assistant Director

Randy Brady currently serves as Director of Bands at Westlake High School in Saratoga Springs, Utah where he directs the marching band, three concert ensembles, and two jazz bands. During his time at Westlake the band has continued its tradition of high achievement by performing as a finalist in the Bands of America St. George Regional (2018), receiving Superior ratings at two Music For All Western Regional Concert Band Festivals (2019, 2020), qualifying for State Jazz Band Festival (2020), and performing at the Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional in San Antonio, TX (2019). Mr. Brady was award 2019-2020 Teacher of The Year by the Westlake High School PTSA.
Mr. Brady is now in his 12th year of teaching that began by teaching in the Snake River School District in Mooreland, Idaho. During his tenure at Snake River the 6-12 band program increased in size from 36 students to just over 200. He also facilitated the creation of a fifth grade beginning band, high school jazz band, marching band, and two percussion ensembles. Mr. Brady wrote several successful grants that resulted in thousands of dollars of funding to the Snake River band program. In 2011-2012 he received the Snake River Junior High Teacher of the Year Award and the Snake River School District Teacher of the Year.
In 2015 Mr. Brady began working as visiting faculty at Brigham Young University-Idaho teaching courses in band education and supervising student teachers. Ensemble responsibilities included directed the University Band and Jazz Lab Band. Mr. Brady also served as interim Saxophone Studio Instructor teaching lessons and directing the Saxophone Ensemble. Throughout his three-year visiting contract, he assisted with directing the BYU-Idaho Symphonic Band and was interim director of the ensemble during the 2018 Spring semester.
Mr. Brady is a graduate of Brigham Young University-Idaho where he completed a Bachelors in Music Education. He later attended the American Band College where he completed a Master of Arts in Band Conducting through Sam Houston State University. Mr. Brady has been fortunate to receive conducting instruction and critique from Anthony Maiello, Robert Ponto, Scott Hagen, and Craig Kirchhoff.
